Introduction to Garuda Indonesia
|
The Indonesian full-service airline Garuda Indonesia was officially founded in 1949, but operated flights earlier around the end of the Japanese occupation of the country and the following struggle for independence. The name of the airline, Garuda, is derived from the mythical bird from Hindu and Buddhist mythology.
Because of the fact that Garuda Indonesia was de facto the only airline in Indonesia until the 1990's, the airline was able to grow almost limitless, and that is exactly what happened. During the 1960's the airline grew quickly and was able to expand internationally with flights to many destinations across the globe.
In the 1970's and 1980's many of their planes were replaced with newer, more modern planes. In 1985 the Garuda Indonesia brand was rebranded with the main colors becoming dark green and dark blue, both of which are currently still in use, be it in a further modernized version.
The airline had some though years in the 1990's, in which the airline heavily suffered from the Asian financial crisis. After that the reputation of the airline sharply dropped and the airline was also banned from flying to countries in the European Union because of safety concerns.
Under current president Emirsyah Satar, the airline has started a complete renewal and revival of it's fleet from 2005. The brand Garuda Indonesia has become much stronger and the airline also returned to making profits. In 2011 the state-owned airline was brough to the Jakarta Stock Exchange.
Nowadays Garuda Indonesia operates 107 planes, has 80 waiting for delivery and operates flights to many destinations in Indonesia and across the word. On the domestic market in Indonesia, Garuda Indonesia is the second largest airline after Lion Air. The airline transported some 17.1 million passengers in 2011.
